It is important to contemplate that when the evildoer was crucified next to Jesus, Jesus assured him, "Truly I tell you today, you will be with me in paradise." Jesus mediated for him right there on the spot. There was no special priest, body of men, intercessorof any kind that stood between Jesus and the repentant man. He was NOW SAVED!
There is no doubt that a fair number of Jehovah's Witnesses are not aware that the official teaching of the Governing Body is that Jesus is NOT your Mediator! That is correct. It is a teaching found in many articles (Watchtower 1979 Apr 1 p.31 ; Worldwide Security Under the "Prince of Peace" (1986) pp.10-11 ; Watchtower 1979 Apr 1 p.31 ; Watchtower 1979 Nov 15 p.27 Benefiting from "One Mediator Between God and Men" ; God's Word For Us Through Jeremiah p.173)
Of all the false doctrines I have found, this is up there in the top three. Perhaps it may be the most critically wrong teaching of all. And the reason is that it literally places Jesus as the Mediator between God the "anointed," or "Governing Body," only! The "other sheep," as taught by the Governing Body, may only reap "certain blessings" (a term often used without any explanation as to what "certain blessings" mean) from that relationship as long as they cling closely to the Governing Body! It is their claim that YOU are not part of the new covenant. That the new covenant is between them and Jesus only! It is not difficult to quickly ascertain the purpose of this teaching. Once it was formally established as doctrine, it in effect stated that ALL PEOPLES the world may only be saved if they flee to the organization of Jehovah's Witnesses! But since the above scripture in 1 Timothy 2:5 clearly states that Christ is the Mediator between God and men... "who gave Himself as a ransom for ALL," (caps ours), we may rightly conclude that this is another false teaching, based on false premise.
Unwittingly, when the Governing Body came up with the massive debacle of this outrageous teaching, it made it clear that "ALL" men (or peoples) would need to flee their individual Christian faiths, and join the Jehovah's Witnesses to avail themselves of the sacrifice of Christ Jesus! What a conundrum of a teaching! How do they explain the relationship of all those, after the death of Christ (the past 1900 years)? What about them? After all, the organization has only been around for approximately 130 years! When arriving to this doctrine, did the Governing Body honestly believe that the writer of that verse (the apostle Paul), and the Author (Jehovah) anticipated that thousands of years in to the future, a small band of Christians would rise up and "all" men would need to flee to that organization to avail themselves of the Mediatorship of Jesus? But wait... still, according to the Governing Body teaching, they could not consider Christ Jesus as their Mediator... only the ones claiming to be anointed of this group?
This is, in essence, is what the teaching implies!
It is clear that the purpose of this teaching was to solidify their authority on earth. But in the attempt to grant themselves this unbelievable, and need I say, ecclesiastical authority of a colossal level, they threw our Master and King on the back burner! Yes, they placed themselves between Jesus and the rest of the fold! What a shocking blasphemy against our Lord.
HOW DID THEY ARRIVE AT THIS CONCLUSION?
The Governing Body drew an analogy to that of the Aaronic priesthood (under Moses) in the old covenant. Under the new covenant arrangement, they teach that they are like Aaron that served in the old covenant. But there is a stark difference! Under the old covenant arrangement, our Father Jehovah inaugurated it by a series of miracles that proved undoubtedly that Moses and Aaron were selected by him to represented him. By contrast, the Governing Body has no credentials of any sort. They placed themselves in their relative seats, insisting that their appointment was by God, through Jesus. They claim that they merit seats of absolute unimpeachable authority, under the new covenant arrangement. They believe they are similar to the role Aaron served under Moses, that in the new covenant (under Jesus, the "Greater Moses") they are Aaron-like in a priestly capacity. But here is the MASSIVE paradigm of this teaching unfolds... when Christ died, it did away with the division between the priestly and non-priestly class, so there was NO longer a need for an intercessor of any sort! Christ Jesus was now High Priest. No other priest, or intercessor was needed! Therefore, their entire premise falls to pieces in an embarrassing scattering of bad sense! More like, non-sense! As a Jehovah's Witness for 45 years, it is incredibly embarrassing for me to admit that at one time I fell for that outrageous line of reasoning!
That fact is... Christ Jesus IS YOUR MEDIATOR, no matter what the self-appointing Governing Body may suggest, or insist! Is it any wonder that
the prophet Jeremiah wrote: "The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; Who can understand it?" The fact is, men of
an incredible sense of authority, and control, created these unbelievably unscriptural teachings. The quest for power, authority, and recognition is a powerful force. This is evident when one considers the certain mentality prevalent in how the Governing Body views the "rank and file." On November 16, 1979 while presiding at the morning Bible text discussion, Frederick Franz stated that some were questioning the Society's position (that was set forth in a recent Watchtower article), that Jesus was the Mediator ONLY for the "anointed" ones and not for the other millions of Jehovah's Witnesses. He said of such ones: "They would merge everyone together and make Jesus Christ the Mediator for every Tom, Dick and Harry."*
When it comes to such false doctrine, we must only wonder if it is due to the treachery of the heart that the leadership could allow something as this to perpetuate year after year. It is worth noting that even King David allowed his heart to become treacherous on more than one occasion. As such, Satan recognized that and took advantage of the opportunity to mislead him because of it! (1 Chron 21:1) Surely, if a man who was used by God on so many occasions was capable of being mislead by Satan, certainly such men who have merited themselves to possess such self-appointed authority can also be used by Satan?
Yes... as God's Word makes abundantly clear, Jesus is YOUR Mediator!
